About This Spring

The spring rises from underneath two very large stones known as ‘Jock and Jennies Stones’ (noted as such on a 1970 archaeological map of the site: Hampshire Field Club and Archaeological Society), at the bottom of a hill which was once an Iron Age hill fort (c.800BC), now known locally as Caesars Camp. The spring is at the bottom of the hill and cannot be seen from the top due to the foliage on the hill side and the steep nature of the bank. Where the water rises from precisely is hard to see due to the overgrown nature of the area around and above the stones. However, the spring has made its immediate surroundings very lush and does so as it winds through the landscape into what on maps is called Claycart Stream, and this stream runs into a larger stream/small river, which is not named on the map.

The spring is on public land and is accessible to the public (well those that can climb down the very steep and slippery gravel covered hill), but I wouldn’t say that it is drinkable, although I suppose you could drink it if you had a way to collect it.
