About This Spring

The Majonini Spring is located within the village of Meidingen, which has a population of close to 783 households. The community receives water supply through the municipal borehole system. However, due to challenges that the municipality is facing, sometimes the community does not receive water from the borehole system. As a result the community fetches water from the springs located within the village. Majonini Spring is one of the first and largest springs named after Majonini section within Meidingen.

The spring has been protected using concrete slabs and fencing around the spring area. Water is harvested through a pipe connected to the spring. The local community has socio-cultural beliefs associated with the spring. Some of the beliefs have led to regulations that include a prohibition against the cutting of the indigenous trees locally known as Mogo, which are highly associated with the production of spring water, and the deterrence of women from entering the fenced area. Another general belief is that there is a snake that lives inside the spring, which is also responsible for regulating the flow and quality of the water. It is also believed that any interference with the spring and its natural environment may provoke the snake and this could lead to the drying up of the spring.

The flow-rate as measured on the outlet pipe connected to the spring during the dry season was 10 seconds per litre (i.e. 0.1 litres/second). Reports from the local community indicate that the flow-rate increases substantially during the rainy season. Although the spring is protected against foreign contamination, the water quality results have confirmed higher levels of nitrates and e-coli. Other parameters have been found to be within reasonable limit, such as pH at 6.1 and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) at 135.
