About This Spring

A Legacy of Healing, Reimagined for Today

Long before hotels and highways, the warm mineral waters at Moccasin Springs flowed through a natural, moccasin-shaped sandstone basin—sacred to the Sioux and Cheyenne peoples, who knew them as Minnekahta, “warm water.” For generations, these springs were a place of ceremony, rest, and renewal.

In the late 1800s, settlers built bathhouses and grand hotels around the springs, drawing visitors from across the country. The Black Hills Spa opened in 1881, followed by the Minnekahta Bathhouse in 1890 and the Open Air Plunge in 1913. For decades, the site stood at the heart of Hot Springs’ reputation as a premier wellness destination—until operations ceased in 1963, leaving the buildings to weather and crumble.

Half a century later, local developer (Kara Hagen) saw beyond the ruins to what the springs had always been—a place of healing. She preserved the original sandstone foundations and arches, weaving them into a new vision. In May 2019, Moccasin Springs Natural Mineral Spa reopened, blending historic character with modern comfort.

Today, guests soak in six outdoor pools, each fed by the same mineral waters that have flowed here for centuries, with temperatures ranging from a refreshing 80 °F to a soothing 105 °F. The spa offers massage therapy, a three-in-one infrared sauna, yoga and movement classes, a salt room, and locally inspired dining at the Dragonfly Restaurant. Mature gardens, peaceful music, and the timeless sandstone architecture create an atmosphere where the past and present meet in quiet harmony. Dragonflies are often seen visiting, elevating the magical experience of your soak.

At Moccasin Springs, you’re not just visiting a spa—you’re stepping into a living history of wellness that continues to restore, renew, and inspire.
